On July 26, 2003 the 2nd
Annual
Houston Record Breakers kicked off. By the end of the meet a
whopping 66 Texas records, 19 American records and 19 World records
were either set or broken. Thirteen year old Gary Cooper lifting
in the 132's , had a great day with his first time in the sport of
powerlifting setting a 170 pound bench press Texas record. Jesus
Rodriguez (16) hit a Texas record on his second attempt in the bench
press with his successful lift of 220 pounds. Twenty-two year old
James Evans lifted in the 181's and opened with a 425 squat and then
came right back to hit 450, both of which were Texas records.
Veteran masters lifter Brian Kline (52) had a great day despite having
a severe case of gout in his hand which eventually caused him to drop
out of the meet. Brian opened with a word record squat of 475
pounds and came back to break it two more time going 500 and 530.
Twenty-seven year old Josh Ash lifting in the 220's hit a big 685
deadlift on his second attempt for a Texas record and just missed 700
pounds on his third attempt. Also in the 220's Brian Propst (35)
set three Texas records in the squat going 405, 430, and 450. Propst
also set a Texas record with hi total of 1290. Again in the 220's, Jody
Suggs (18) set two Texas records and an American record in the squat
going 550 and 575 (american record). On the bench press Suggs set
three Texas records back to back with his lifts of 325, 335 and
345. Suggs came right back and pulled a 505 deadlift on his
second attempt for an American record. After it was all over
Suggs set both a Texas and American record with his total of 1425
pounds. Masters lifter Robert Mitchell (47) squatted 400 pounds
for a Texas record, hit 275 and 300 for two Texas records, pulled 405
for a Texas record and totaled 1105 for yet another Texas record.
Nineteen year old LeBradford Johnson had a fantastic day lifting in the
275's squatting 625 on his third attempt for a Texas, American and
World record. Steve Burtschelle (40) lifting in the masters 308's
broke a Texas record with his 655 second attempt. He just missed
700 on his third. Steve benched 475 and 505 setting two more
Texas records. Steve also broke another Texas record with his
1765 total. Master lifter Steve Rosenbug (51), lifting in the 220
bench press meet set a Texas record with his 335 pound bench.
THSPA Texas Champion Caleb Rowton (19), guest lifting in the Teen 275's
bench only opened up with a massive 505 for a Texas, American and World
record. Caleb went 545 on his next two attempt but just missed it
both times. There is not doubt Caleb will break 600 before he
turns 20. Another first time lifter Marc LeBlanc (40) competing
in the masters bench meet set a Texas record with his 275 lift.
In the deadlift only meet, Charlie Turco (47) opened with 540 in the
masters 242's and set a Texas record. Turco came back two times
to attempt 607.5 for a World record but just missed both times.
In the women's divisions Jessica Franklin (16), lifting in the 114's
squatted 70 and 90 pound for two Texas records. Franklin came
back to bench 45, 55 and 60 for three more Texas records. In the
deadlift Jessica pulled 170, 205, and 220 for yet three more Texas
records. Franklin's total of 375 gave her one more Texas
record for a total of nine.
Jessica Morant (17) lifted in the 132's and walked out with two Texas
records for her lifts of 135 and 150 pounds. She came right back
and earned two Texas records in the bench going 65 and 95. In the
deadlift Jessica went 230 and 280 for two more Texas records.
Morant's total of 525 gave her one more for her collection.
Lifting competitively for the very first time, Jennifer Davis (13) four
Texas records in the 198's by squatting 135 and 170,
deadlifting 250, and totaling 520. Master lifter Hilary Reeh (47)
in only her 2nd powerlifting meet came back to set 10 Texas records, 10
American records, and 10 World records. Hilary lifted in the
masters unlimited and went 9 for 8 with a 185 squat, 135 bench, 230
deadlift , and 550 total.

results of the NASA 4th of
July Spectacular held in Alvin, Texas are in. Congratulations
to all the lifters who competed in this meet!

Congratulations to Wade Hooper of
Bryan, Texas and Tony Cardella of Spring, Texas for their 1st place
wins in the USAPL Men's Nationals. Wade lifted in the 165's and
ended up with a 727 squat, 446 bench, 600 deadlift and a1774
total. Tony lifted the the 275's and had a 815 squat, 551 bench,
744 deadlift and a 2110 total. Wade Hooper also was awarded
Overall Lightweight Division Champion.

The APF/USPF
Texas State Meet was held in Round Rock, Texas on March 29th.
There
were about 200 lifters from both federations there and many records
were
set and broken. Click on the link above to view the results.
Of
course there was a little controvery involved with this unified effort,
but
you can decide for yourself it it was a success or failure.
Congratulations
to all who lifted in both federations.

The
2003 APA Teenage Nationals and Tri State Open was held March 1st in
the Paul Revere weight room. The meet was a HUGE success.
From Neederland 12 year old, 90-pound Brandon Gary went the newly
formed 97-pound, 11-12 year
old boys division by going 225, 110, 225, and 560 setting 4 Texas
records, 4 American records, and 4 World records. Lifting in the
13-15 year old,
97-pound division, Jeremy Lawson from Houston, Texas went 135, 95, 175,
405,
setting 3 Texas records, 4 American records and 4 World records. In the
144-pound
11-12 year old division, Castillo, from Houston, Texas posted a
175-pound
deadlift for a Texas record. In the Teen 16-17 year old 148’s
Robert
McCuistion, from Brazos Port, Texas went 515, 215, 335, and 965 setting

Texas records, 1 American record and 1 World record. Jesus

from Houston, Texas set a Texas record with his 375-pound lift also in
the
Teen 16-17, 148’s. In the Teen 13-15, 165’s, from Ohio, Mike
Welcheck
had a great day going 460, 275, 430, and 1165 setting 4 Texas records,

American records and 4 World records. In the 181 Teen 13-15,
Justin
Brewer, from Houston, Texas hit 420-pounds for a Texas record. In
the
198, teen 13-15 from Houston, Texas, Brett Gibson pounded out a 280
squat
for a 765 total setting 2 Texas records. Also in the 198’s,
submaster
Brian Prost set 2 Texas records with a 425 squat and a 1205 total. 188
masters
50-54 lifter Brian Kline from Houston, Texas had a great day going 470,
315,
500 for a 1285 total setting 4 Texas records, 2 American records and 2
World
records. In the 200-pound, teem 13-15 division from Houston,
Texas;
Reid Turner pulled a 330-pound deadlift setting an Texas record and an
American
record. In the 200-pound Teen 18-19 division, Tommy Prude from
Houston,
Texas 450, 320 525 for a 1250 total setting 4 Texas records. In
the
Teen 13-15 308’s, Francisco “Box” Hernandez set 2 Texas records with
his
225 bench press and 350 deadlift.
In the women meet Amber Ryan, from Houston, Texas lifting in the
148-pound Teen 13-15 division bench pressed 80-pounds for a new Texas
record. Lifting in the 16-17 year old division, Beck Simpson
from, South Carolina had a great day going 335, 210, 355 for a
900-pound total and setting 4 Texas, 4 American, and 4 World records.
Lifting in the 165 teen 13-15 division Nkonia Okafer bench pressed
100-pound for a new Texas record. In the 181 Teen 13-15 division,
Crystal Davis from Houston, Texas set 3 Texas records going 175, 105,
290 for a 570 total. Also in the 198’s lifting in the Teen 18-19
year old division from Nacona, Texas, Josey McAlister 330, 140, 345 and
815 setting e Texas, 2 American, and 2 World records. In the 198
Teen 18-19’s again from Nacona, Texas, Amanda Godwin posted 240, 210,
260 and a 610 total setting 4 Texas, 2 American, and 2 World
records. Lifting in the Unlimited Teen 13-15 year old division,
from Houston, Texas, Solia Carter set a Texas record with her 80-pound
bench press.
By the end of the day 52 Texas records, 16 Americans, and 15 World
records were broken. Also making an appearance as head judge was
APA judge and
powerlifting legend Anthony Clark. I would like to thank my
loaders from Aldine High School and Stovall Middle School. My
judges Anthony Clark, Shannon McDougald, and Tom McCullough. Also
spotters, Josh Devenroux and Celeb Rowton. A special thanks to
Houston ISD for allowing us to use the facilities. Thanks also to
John Inzer of Inzer Advance Designs for all his support of the sport
and the APA, The House of Pain, and Mike Lambert of Powerlfiting USA
for his continued support of both the sport on the APA. Without
all of these fine people and companies, this sport and our contests
would not happen.

Despite the horrible news of the Challenger crash 30 minutes after
the start of the meet the APA
/ Texas Middle School Powerlifting Association Houston Open was a
huge success. Antonio Smith (13) lifting in the 123’s set a Texas
squat
record of 210pounds taking 1st place in his division.
Thirteen-year-old
Brett Gibson had a big day winning first in the 198’s and setting two
Texas
records with his 250-pound squat and 350-pound deadlift. Sixty-nine
year
old Jim McVeigh won his division in the 198’s by setting four Texas
records
with his 295 pound squat, 250 pound bench press, 370 pound deadlift and
a
860 pound total. Seventeen-year-old David Rogers set the platform on
fire
walking away with the Overall Lifter award. Rodgers also won
first
in his division and set 4 Texas records with his 550 pound squat,
355-pound
bench press, 505-pound deadlift and a 1420-pound total. Robert Mitchell
(46)
won the masters 242’s with three Texas records. Mitchell has a
380-pound
squat, 275-pound bench press, and a 400-pound deadlift. Brian Jones
(13)
won the 275 teen division by setting two Texas records. Jones
pulled
a 400-pound deadlift and totaled 805 pounds. In the teen 308’s,
Francisco
Hernandez won his division with Texas record squat of 215 pounds and a
Texas
record total of 760 pounds.
In the men’s bench press only division Lee Kelly won the juniors with a
Texas record bench of 335 pounds. Forty –one year old Marvin
Jackson set a Texas record winning the masters 40-45 with a 320-pound
bench press. Taking first in the masters 50-54, Jim Leitner set a
Texas record with his 330-pound bench. In the masters 56-59, 242-pound
division Dale Turner won his division and set a Texas record with a
260-pound bench press. Two SWH’s showed up to bench. In the
master 40-45 division Jim Walter set a
Texas record with his bench press of 375 pounds winning his division
and
George Wells wont the masters 46-49 with his Texas record bench press
of
285 pounds.
In the women’s 148’s Estella Dimitryevic had a great day winning her
division and setting three Texas records. Dimitryevic ended the
day with a
265-pound squat, a 320-pound deadlift, and a 720-pound total. In
the
teen 165 division Nkeonyeakonia Okafor (13) won he division and set two
Texas records. Okafor ended her day with a 245-pound deadlift and
a 465 total.
I would like to thank the Revere Middle School and Houston ISD for
providing the space to hold these meets. Also Inzer Advance
Designs and House of Paine for the continued support of the APA/ TMSPA
and the sport of powerlifting. A special thanks to our

lifting. In the new 97 pound 11-12 division Ritter, from Stovall
Middle School walked out with a gold medal and state, American, and
World records for his 265-pound total. In the 97 pound 13-15
division, Stovall Middle School’s Lawson also had a fine day with
Texas, American and World records for his 370 total. Also from
Stovall, Pairs several Texas, American and World records with his 485
total. In the 123 teen 13-15, Antonio Smith from Revere Middle
School walked away with the gold and a Texas record with his 205-pound
squat and 575 total. In the 132 master 40-46 division, legend JD Carr
made an appearance and pulled an easy 450 opener setting not only a
Texas record, but an American and World. 148’er Rodriguez, from
Aldine HS, set 4 Texas records and won the gold with his 785 total in
the 16-17 division. In the 165’s Wade had a great day in the
juniors with his four Texas records and a winning total of 1415.

Over all lifter in the adult meet was Larry Fenti, from San Antonio,
Texas. In the Teen Boy’s Division J. Lawson of Stovall
Middle school
won best boys lifter and Crystal Davis of Stovall Middle School won
best girls lifter. Taking the Team Trophy was Stovall
Middle School. After all the chalk dust settled 56 Texas, 23
American,
and 12 World records were broken.
Special thanks for all the people who helped this meet to be

McCullough of Revere for bringing all their kids. Thanks also to
Houston ISD and Aldine
ISD for their support of our sport by allowing their kids to

The Texas Powerlfiting
Scene and the Rever Middle School Powerlfiting Team would like to
welcome one of Canada's Strongest Men Steve
Wiseman to Houston. Steve is down for the next two weeks
visiting family for the Holidays all the way from St. Johns
Newfoundland. Steve earned the title as one of Canada's Strongest
Man by totaling 2243 in the WPC World Chamionships at 307
lbs of body weight on May 19, 2001. with an 804 squat, 639 bench press,
and a 799 deadlift.

This weekend at Rever Middle school
in Hoston, Texas the 2nd
Annual
APA
/ TMSPA Patriot Open was held. A special thanks goes out to
thank
Brian Kline, Mark, Ann and Amanda Harris, Shannon McDougald, Buddy
Rhoades,
Josh Devereaux, Jack and El Ruth McCullough, Caleb Rowton, and Jim
Royce
for their hard work to make this meet happen. Also a special
thanks
to Coach Charles Brown and of the Aldine School District and Tom
McCullough of the Houston ISD for thier special support of middle
school powerlifting. Also a big thanks to Houston ISD and Revere
Middle School for their support of our sport. Last but not least,
thank to Officer Joe Rodriguez
of the HISD Police for helping us with security. The is the 2nd
official year that the APA and Texas Middle School Powerlifting
Association have worked together in promoting powerlifting the
kids. This year we
also added adult divisions to our meets. As you can see the
results
were great. Lots of very good lifting by both the kids and the
adults. This year we added two divisions to the teens meets, the
97 and 105 pound weight groups. Lawson and Paris from
Stovall Middle School
were the first lifters to put their mark in Texas records. Both
also
qualified for APA American records and WPA World records.
Williams
from Stovall Middle School walked out with 3 Texas records and 2
American
and World records. Williams also left the meet as Best Lifter in
the teen meet with his 785 total at 144 lbs. In the 148's
Dillsworth
walked off with 2 new Texas records. Patino in the 181's, got a
Texas
record in the deadlift. From ElPaso, Texas, Christian Moore got 3
Texas records and also earned the title of Best Lifter in the adult
meet
with his total of 1490 at 181. Masters lifter Charles Gray from
Oklahoma
ended his day with 4 Texas records and a 1205 total. 198 pound 8th
grader
Ayes received 2 Texas records, while 60 year old Price Whitley got 4
Texas
records with his 1240 total. Houston lifter Tiny Meeker came to
lift
even though he had an injury. Tiny set out to destroy the WPA 275
bench
record of 700 with a 705 attempt. Tiny opened and nailed a big
650
on his 1st attempt. On his 2nd he attempted 705 and got out of
the
groove. The 3rd attempt at 705 hooked up fine but his foot
slipped
causing him to just miss locking it out. Tiny ended the day with
a drug free Texas, American, and World record with his opener of 650 in
the 275's. Big Pete Lattanzi of Houston also had a bit day in the
SHW masters with his 460 bench and a Texas record. In the women's
divisions Chris Garry had a great day in the 97's with 4 Texas
records.
Saba Wilson of ElPaso Texas walked away with 5 Texas records in the
submasters
and open 132's. 8th grader Morrant took 3 Texas records home in
the
teen 132's and also got Best Lifter in the teen meet. Loni Powell
had a big day taking 2 Texas records in both the women's 148 masters
and
open divisions. At the end of the day 43 Texas records , 11
American records, and 11 World records were set or broken by some of
the best lifters in Texas. Thanks again to all who helped this

NASA held their 2002 Texas Classic this past weekend in Longview, Texas. Congratulations to all who lifted in this meet! Setting some big records in Longview was Texas lifter Micki Scheffler who is quickly becoming the strongest female lifter the state has ever seen. Scheffler ended her day with a 430 lb. squat, a 226 lb bench press, and 419 lb deadlift, and a 1069 lb total in the 165's. This total places Micki as #1 in the ALL TIME COMBINED TEXAS RECORDS in the 165's, as well as #1 in the 148's with her 1032 lb total.
